Robotics Teams Compete at RI State Championship

January 20, 2016

All Saints STEAM Academy robotics teams wrapped up a successful FIRST Lego League (FLL) season on Saturday January 16 at the RI FLL Robotics State Championships held at Roger Williams University. All Saints STEAM Academy (AS2A) had two teams represented at the State Championships – Architectonas and Mindstorms Mayhem. Both teams received call backs at RWU indicating they were considered one of the top teams on the day. Architectonas received a call back for their research project where they created a filter for microbeads which are in many products and kill the fish in our waters, and Mindstorms Mayhem for their robot design. Judges at RWU praised Architectonas for being one of the only teams at the state championships to attempt a particularly difficult mission with their robot. Mindstorms Mayhem scored 401 points in the robot game making it one of the highest scoring runs at the state championships as well as the highest scoring robot in AS2A history.

AS2A has been participating in FLL robotics since 2010. In the six years since students from AS2A have been participating, an AS2A team has won the qualifying tournament four times and the state championship three times. AS2A has been invited to the FLL World Championship twice, the most recent being in 2015. While AS2A students in the 4th through 8th grades participate in FLL, students in grades 1 through 3 participate in Jr. FLL where they are introduced to the engineering and coding through the use of LEGO’s. All students who participate in FLL learn about core values and how to treat teammates, coaches, mentors and other teams with respect. In addition, each year FLL has a real world problem that teams research, interview experts, develop solutions to and present that solution to multiple organizations including the judges at the FLL tournament. This year the theme was Trash Trek. Mindstorms Mayhem was inspired by their research for their talk with the International Space Station in May for their research project and have inspired teachers to reduce classroom paper use and waste.

AS2A FLL,Jr teams will participate in the Robot Block Party on April 9th at Brown University. This event is free to the public and has robots and hands on STEAM activities for all ages.
