Dear AS²A Families,
Love was in the air this week as we celebrated Valentine’s Day with a dress down day, classroom parties and activities. The Primary Team students participated in an afternoon of Valentine themed STEAM challenges. Students rotated through three heart themed classroom activities putting the Engineering Design Process into action.
Our science discovery continued with the Middle School Science and Engineering Fair on Wednesday. Students have worked since November to research and experiment on a chosen area of science. Judges from the Naval Academy Preparatory School and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center were on site Wednesday to listen to each student present their findings. All were impressed with the students’ knowledge of their topic and their ability to present in such a professional manner. Congratulations to all who participated and especially to our winners who will go on to represent AS²A at the Rhode Island Science and Engineering Fair in March:
Anne Tauer, 1st Place - Grade 6 “Which Type of Trash Produces the Tallest Garden Cress Plant?”
Emma Lavery, 1st Place - Grade 7 “Does Color Affect Short-Term Memory?”
Kaitlyn Fletcher, 1st Place - Grade 8 “Does Running, Bike Riding, or Skateboarding Increase Heart Rate Most?”
Salvador Pérez-Echevarria, 2nd Place- Grade 6 “When Launched From a Catapult, Which Clay Shape has the Least Drag?”
Rose Morrissey, 2nd Place - Grade 7 “Does Time of Day Affect the Efficiency of Blue Light Blocking Glasses?”
Leo Eder, 3rd Place - Grade 6 “Does the Length of a Paper Airplane’s Wingspan Affect the Distance it Travels When Launched from a Catapult?”
Kristina Arruda, 3rd Place - Grade 7 “Does the Color of Light Affect the Rate of Lima Bean Germination?”
Thank you, Mrs. Sornberger, for organizing the Middle School Science Fair!
Special Note: Thank you to Thomas Dunn, Class of 2013, for judging our Science Fair. Thomas commented, “Though it wasn’t my favorite at the time, I recognized the value of this project when I got to Bishop Hendricken. So many of my peers did not know how to write a research paper or organize a project of this size.”
Re-enrollment News:
It is time to re-enroll for the 2023-2024 school year. The re-enrollment form for current families is due March 15, 2023. We currently have 40 applications for new students awaiting acceptance. Fast Forward Open House:
Are you curious what next year’s class will look like for your student? You are invited to find out! Join us on Friday, March 24, 9am to 12pm for Fast Forward Open House. Visit and learn about the classroom your child will join next year. Look for more information about this after Winter Break.
Water Bottles in Classrooms:
Students may have a bottle of plain water in the classroom for use during the day. The filtered water station may be used for refills. Coffee, lattes, soda, Gatorade, and tea drinks are not permitted in the classroom.
Dates to Remember:
Did you know?
In 2006 every AS²A student had a part in painting the wall of saints in the multipurpose room. Bishop Tobin celebrated mass in the room and blessed the saint mural. It continues to be a point of inspiration and pride for all.

Have a wonderful Winter Break!
